Ideas for holidays, weekends and trips in Laon and its surroundings

Laon, situated atop a hill, is one of the highest points in the Picardy region, and was strategically important when the town was first founded, so the culture and history here are fascinating! Why not start by exploring the old town? Here, you will find the Notre-Dame cathedral, which was built in the late 12th century, and the four bell towers with their animal sculptures at the top are a sight to behold. The Templar chapel, also built in the 12th century, is not far from here, and inside you will find the Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie de Laon (Art and Archaeology museum). You can see some fantastic paintings and sculpture here, as well as furniture and examples of earthenware. There are audio-guide tours available around the town, so if you want to find out more about Laon and its heritage and culture, these are worth it.

15km out of Laon is the Saint-Gobain Forest, a picturesque spot which is perfect for a day's cycling, or perhaps a picnic and an afternoon stroll. Following a day's sight-seeing, you'll have worked up an appetite, so why not enjoy some of the local cuisine on offer in one of Laon's great restaurants? Some traditional Picardy dishes include blanquette, a type of dish which can be made with veal, fish or vegetables in white sauce with rice, and caghuse, which is made from slices of pork cooked with onions in vinegar and white wine. Delicious! So wait no longer, book your room at the Premiere Classe LAON too.
